FELA stands for the Federal Employers Liability Act, a law passed by Congress in the early 20th century to offer exclusive protections to those working in the railroad industry. While working conditions are not as deplorable as they were at the time when FELA was enacted, working on the railroad is still very dangerous work. Through FELA, railroad workers can hold their employers directly accountable for injuries, a luxury afforded to very few other professions in the U.S.
